Advocacy
Project
The most important aspect of the work of our organisation
is to attempt change the mindsets of all who are involved in the
labour field.
Our major
tasks are therefore:
- To contribute
to the advancement of the struggle against unemployment and
to help create a favourable environment for job creation and
economic growth.
- To influence
economic policy in the direction that would best accommodate
the interests of the unemployed and create more job opportunities,
through submissions to parliament, media briefings, lobbying
and participation in discussions and debates.
Project
Activities
- To encourage
relevant research and data collection on unemployment and alternatives
to joblessness.
- To monitor
economic policy developments that impact on the unemployed and
the economy in general.
- To influence
thinking on the importance of a favourable job-creation environment
marked by high economic growth.
- To create
networks with NGOs, trade unions and business organisations
with the objective of reducing unemployment and alleviating
poverty.
- To engender
good relations between the unemployed, trade unions and business
by persuading all the parties that employers and employees should
be partners and not antagonists.
The Role
of Business in Reducing Unemployment
Business in general should adopt clear policies regarding the
labour laws. Malamulela is prepared to work with business to remove
obstacles to investment and job-creation. Malamulela’s sole mission
is to increase the demand for labour in South Africa - a demand
that must come from business.
The Role
of Trade Unions
Organised labour in South Africa has the important role of ensuring
that a partnership is created and consolidated between itself
and the unemployed. The worker struggle can never be realised
without such a partnership. Organised labour should acknowledge
that the unemployed must have a voice in matters affecting them
and can play an important role in such a partnership. Labour should
also play a role in organising skills training for the unemployed
to help them obtain jobs.
The Role
of NGOs
Development centred NGOs should begin to articulate the struggle
of the unemployed. NGO programmes and projects should empower
the unemployed in a variety of ways, especially in the creation
of sustainable projects that will reduce unemployment. NGOs should
empower the unemployed by inviting them to participate in workshops,
conferences and meetings etc. More research and development funding
needs to be invested by NGOs on unemployment, job creation and
the production of data.
