City 400 - Sponsored by Toyota
The Sun
City race is notorious for difficult conditions and terrain
whether it be heat or rain. Well this year was no exception
with extreme heat causing problems to many competitors.
THE PROLOGUE:
started at 12:55 on Friday 26th Sept. with a BAT at the head
of the field being piloted by Belgian Gregoire de Mevius with
Andrew van Zyl as his navigator. Brandon and Gary seaded 6th
took off down what was supposed to be 980m dead straight road,
halfway down this road their race was nearly run, narrowly
avoiding the unmarked grave yard. With a lucky escape 7km
further down the road Brandon managed to hit a tree stump
and got a deserved flat wheel. With great speed they changed
the wheel and proceeded to apply the pedal to the metal for
the remaining 33km recovering to 9th place overall. Well done
to Mark Corbett with a well deserved Pole Position.

THE RACE:
With Gary at the wheel, they started in a tough position with
the 8 cars ahead creating MEGA dust. They decided to play
the waiting game and after 80km had managed to move into the
lead in the Special Vehicle Category due to competitors experiencing
technical problems. They managed to open up a healthy lead
until the middle of the 2nd loop when Apie T-boned them damaging
the car and causing a pap flat. Once again with great speed
they changed their 2nd flat wheel of the weekend.
On completion
of the 2nd lap it was time to pit and change drivers. It was
at this point that they enjoyed a 25 minute lead ahead of
the next special vehicle competitor and were lying 3rd overall.
With Brandon now at the wheel they set off on the final lap,
once again enjoying the lead over fellow competitors. They
adopted a pace that would not jeopardise the car (Decided
to BLOM). With 80km to go, the president of road crossing
information, Mr Bevan Bertholdt himself, informed us that
the Ford had powersteering problems. With this information,
they set out to complete their last 80kms and with 50kms to
go, they passed the Found On Road Dead (FORD) and cruised
home to 2nd overall and 1st in the Special Vehicle Category.

Special
Mention once again to Clint Gibson for his GIANT killing solo
drive to take 4th overall and 2nd Special vehicle and 1st
in Class B.
